Telewest Communications Plc is determined not to allow Cable & Wireless Plc’s cable television alliance to prevent it becoming a major UK telecommunications player in its own right. It is to invest 50m pounds in a venture to develop a national fiber optic network, much of its using the old British Rail Telecommunications network now owned by Racal Electronics Plc. The network would link Telewest’s cable franchises in the UK, and significantly increase its ability to bypass British Telecommunications Plc’s system. Other long-distance carriers are expected to join the party.
