GEC Plc has made the rather surprising choice of Thorn EMI Plc as its partner in the bidding for one of the two to four Telepoint public cordless telephone service operatorlicences on offer in the UK. The choice is surprising because the activity doesn’t seem to fit with any of Thorn EMI’s professed core businesses – apart perhaps from the facts that it may want to manufacture the phones and could sell them through the Rumbelows high street chain. Ferranti will bid through its Creditphone affiliate, Shaye Communications is bidding with Motorola UK, Plessey with Hull Telephone, and British Telecom, Mercury Communications and Racal Telecommunications are also planning to bid.
