Telefonica de Espana is to invest $1,100m in the Spanish city of Seville between 1988 and 1992. Most of the investment will go towards improving the area’s telecommunications infrastructure for Expo ’92 in 1992. The phone company, which will have spent $981m on the city and province’s infrastructure between 1987 and 1992, revealed to the Seville Congress that it will invest $244m this year, $280m next year and $140m in 1992. In addition, Telefonica estimates that it will cost $108m to establish the satellite communications centre, international centre and teleport, all of which are for Expo ’92 and for which the company will install two digital exchanges on the fairground, one of which will remain to serve the city after the fair has folded its tents. Telefonica hopes to cut the waiting list for lines, which will still stand at 10,499 at the end of 1990. Digital connections will also be increased. Of last year’s 42,263 connections, 61% were digital but this year, all 74,633 connections will be digital. At the end of 1989, Seville had a total of 404,114 lines, but this will rise to 606,764 by 1992 for a 50% hike in installations and a 181% increase in digital lines.
