TELEKURS CHALLENGES REUTERS WITH MAC II-BASED FINANCIAL INFORMATION SERVICE

By CBR Staff Writer

Telekurs (UK) Ltd unveiled its Invest Decision System financial securities relational database at a pre-Computers in the City launch yesterday. Telekurs is the wholly owned UK subsidiary of UKP100m a year Telekurs AG of Zurich. Set up 25 years ago by 350 Swiss banks to supply them with financial information in a fashion similar to our own Reuters, Telekurs has gone on to establish links worldwide. Now the UK arm of the company, established just a few months ago, has put its parent’s real-time relational database on the 68020-based Apple Macintosh II. This, it reckons, will provide a service with manipulative capabilities way above those of the Reuters ART terminal, probably Telekurs’ closest competitor. Data will go to international bases from a central computer in Zurich, and be distributed to users via a data feed plugged into the back of their Mac IIs. A potential 200,000 items from 100 markets around the world can be accessed with up to 10,000 available on any one Indes feed. A quote window can be called up with any companies you choose, complete with all price facts. 100 items can be displayed in each window and every time a light flashes above one of them, the price is immediately updated. Alternatively charts can be drawn and a market ticker sent across the screen with, for example, information from the FT-SE 100 share index. In the case of a portfolio manager, Indes will find the best way to make money with a client’s shares as well as calculating the best to sell. In Switzerland, Telekurs is responsible for stock exchange data, interbank clearing and the allocation of security numbers. It was supporting Swiss banks in the UK 18 months before its subsidiary was set up and also has agreements with a number of Japanese security houses. The UK company, hoping to do UKP2m in its first 12 months, is aiming Indes at all large security houses and financial institutions. UKP15,000 will buy the entire system including data, data feed and Mac II. Telekurs also has ValorData for portfolio valuation, to go on-line in the next week, InvestData, which runs on the IBM Personal and is a price interogation service, and TeleData, which is a digital feed.
