TELEFONICA DE ESAPANA INSTALLS EMERGENCY RURAL TELEPHONE SYSTEM IN THE REPUBLIC OF ARMENIA

By CBR Staff Writer

In collaboration with the Soviet telecommunications industry, Telefonica de Espana SA is installing, via its subsidiary Telefonica Internacional, an emergency rural telephone system in the Republic of Armenia to counteract the damage done to the telecommunications infrastructure in the earthquake last December: Telettra Espanola, a Telettra SpA subsidiary 10% owned by Telefonica, is manufacturing the equipment which, when installed, will support 96 subscribers; Telefonica has also recently signed an memorandum of understanding with the Soviet Communications Ministry for a possible Spanish-Soviet company, and for a factory in the USSR to manufacture multiaccess radiophone systems for rural areas.
