An International Telecommunications Union working party has accepted two new open network interface standards aimed at stimulating the growth of cellular networks and worldwide Personal Communications Services. Working Party WP8A of the Radiocommunications Sector of the Union has now approved the US Telecommunications Industry Association Standards IS-634 and IS- 41 for inclusion in the ITU-R M.1073 Recommendation. This contains the technical and operational characteristics of digital cellular systems intended for international use. IS-634 and IS-41 are included in the Recommendation in support of Code Division Multiple Access technology. IS-634 is the open interface standard between the mobile switching centre and radio base station subsystem in a cellular network. The IS-41 protocol nakes inter- system roaming possible. The modified M.1073 Recommendation will receive the final approval at the Union’s SG8 meeting to be held this autumn.
