TELECOM EIREANN MAKE INVESTMENT IN CABLE & WIRELESS’ TELECOM CABLE

By CBR Staff Writer

Cable & Wireless Plc has persuaded Telecom Eireann to make a UKP17.9m investment in its PTAT-1 private optical fibre telecommunications cable under the Atlantic – the spur to Ireland will be laid by STC Plc under a UKP10m contract – and the Irish decision is seen as possibly encouraging some telecommunications authorities on the continent to break ranks and back the pirate cable too: the big outstanding question about the cable is who the US partner or partners behind the Private Transatlantic Telecommunications System Inc will be – as far as Cables is concerned it will be Nynex Corp, New York, but Nynex does not yet have approval to enter the business, and the most recent rulings handed down by Judge Greene do not sound at all encouraging.
