TELECOM EIREANN ENLISTS UKP4m AMDAHL 5990 TO IMPROVE SERVICE TO CUSTOMERS

By CBR Staff Writer

Telecom Eireann has spent UKP4m on a new top-end Amdahl 5990 mainframe as part of its drive to improve customer services. The Irish telecommunications operator aims to provide monthly and two-monthly itemised billing, and an on-line service to answer customer enquiries, over the next few years. The 5990 will be installed alongside Telecom Eireann’s existing 5880, and will be partitioned, using Amdahl’s Multiple Domain feature, into two separate domains. One will be used to improve processing of applications for new services, while the other will store back-up information for the on-line enquiry facility. The 5990 was manufactured at Amdahl’s Swords, County Dublin-based plant, and is believed to be the largest commercial mainframe in Ireland.
