TELECOM AUSTRALIA, HEWLETT FORM BUSINESS COMPUTER VENTURE

By CBR Staff Writer

Hewlett-Packard Co has sold a 50% stake in its Australian marketing operation for business computers to the state-owned monopoly telephone company, Telecom Australia, creating Telecom Hewlett-Packard Pty Ltd as an equally-owned company. Terms were not disclosed and other Hewlett lines – technical computers, measurement products – are unaffected by the move, and will continue to be sold by HP Australia, which has 50% of the new firm. Telecom talked to more than 40 computer companies before choosing Hewlett, and under the agreement, will expand its product offerings to include a full range of Hewlett business computers, including the HP3000 family, workstations and networking kit. The joint-venture will be based at Hewlett’s Melbourne, Victoria base.
