Telecom Australia has been working with Digital Equipment Corp on Intelligent Networking and has come up with something it calls Calling Line Dependent Routing, which the Australians are using in their new and unwieldy named ‘Customnet One 3’ service, which uses the technology to route calls based on information about both the called and the calling parties: the service is similar to ones already available in the US and is also currently planned for the UK; it is designed to enable companies to give out a single telephone number nationwide and be confident that the network will automatically route all calls to the nearest store or office.
