It is a matter of much pride in Japan that at this week’s Telecom 87 show in Geneva, more technical papers will be delivered by Japanese companies than by US companies – the score is 16 to 15: Nippon Telegraph & Tele-phone will present six papers, Hitachi, Oki Electric and Toshiba will submit two each, while the state broadcasting corporation NHK, Kokusai Denshin Denwa and the Radio Research Laboratories of the Ministry of Posts & Telecommunications will present one each; a total of 26 Japanese companies will be exhibiting products for ISDN, high-definition TV, and video conferencing; a global message handling system exdorsed by the International Telecommunications Union, from a UK firm, Level-7 Ltd, will be exhibited by two Japanese firms.
