Sunnyvale California-based Telebit Corp has announced what it calls extended user authentication security features for its dial indial out Asynchronous Communications Server. The authentication security option is aimed at users that require an additional layer of security beyond the password or callback methods. The package consists of an encryption board, installed in the server and related software and one or more RemoteKey devices which allow access to the local network. When the option is installed, each user is assigned an identification and RemoteKey device. The server then has the ability to utilise a challenge and response system verifying the identity of any dial-in user. When dialling in, the user is prompted to enter identification and the server then challenges it by presenting a random eight digit string that the user must enter into a RemoteKey device. The device then offers a response that must be entered to achieve access into the local network. The server proceeds to verify that this string matches that expected of the remote user. Three failed access attempts result in a terminated connection. The price of the EUA option for the AT model of the Telebit ACS is $995, while the Micro Channel version is $1,200. The RemoteKey devices cost $150 each. Both security packages are available now.
