Tektronix Inc of Beaverton, Oregon is pulling out of the workstation market altogether due to stiff competition from the likes of Sun, DEC and Hewlett-Packard. Tektronix chairman Robert Lundeen says that if a viable buyer is not found in 60 days it will discontinue its Motorola 88000-based workstation operation in an orderly manner. Tektronix has been struggling to make its mark in the workstation market for a while – last year its workstation business had a $40m turnover and employed 175 people. Lundeen says it is too early to determine the financial impact of its withdrawal from this business until it knows how it will be disposed. Possible companies sniffing round the operation include Motorola, while Data General might be interested in the Tektronix customer base.
