TEKNOWLEDGE PREVIEWS COPERNICUS

By CBR Staff Writer

Teknowledge Inc has this week been giving – rather woolly – outlines of its new proprietary Copernicus architecture, and the roll-out plans for a family of products it says are designed specifically for developers of expert systems in commercial, mainstream markets. The company says that the aim is that in-house systems analysts and programmers should routinely be able to develop robust, intelligent computing systems using the architecture. Copernicus, it says, features modular design, a layered structure, full integration and support for common applications with generic, application-specific tools. First products in the Copernicus family will include the Copernicus Development Facility; Copernicus Delivery Facility; Copernicus Database Integration Facility; Copernicus Cobol Integration Facility; and TeKSolutions Applications Packs. Teknowledge will begin introducing the suite in the autumn with introduction of the Copernicus core products and many of the family’s optional features for DEC VAX, Apollo and Sun systems. Early in 1988, additional features, and support products for personal computers and mainframe environments will follow. Teknowledge reckons that the architecture will meet the critical needs of the mainstream market by providing powerful and flexible tools that meet the key issues of productivity and ease-of-integration; the capability to incorporate the advantages of expert systems technology with the advantages of conventional, algorithmic programming for building intelligent systems; the capability for customers to use their installed base of hardware, and be able to depend on a clear migration path from development to deliver; and the capability to integrate their expert systems with external system and application software – especially mainframe-resident databases. Teknowledge claims 2,000 licensed copies of its S.1 and M.1 products, with more than 325 unique product customers and more than 100 applications in use today, and says that the Copernicus architecture is the result of more than five years’ experience in training, product and development services experience in the mainstream commercial computing market.
