In an effort to broaden the width of its distribution channels for personal computers in the UK, ICL Plc is relaxing the restrictions that have given Technology Plc exclusive distribution rights since it was acquired by ICL in June 1992 (CI No 1,956). A new entity, Client Server Systems Trading, will be responsible for supplying the personal computers to Technology itself along with new distributors, resellers and value added resellers. ICL’s systems integration businesses will also be able to sell personal computers direct as part of large projects. The new division should be in place by mid-year, and will be headed up by Nigel Croysdale, previously director of ICL’s financial services division. Frank Harrison from Technology Plc will also make the transfer. Although additional distributors have yet to be announced, Metrologie Plc, which already sells ICL personal computers in France, is expected to be high on the list. ICL says it sold some 250,000 boxes worldwide in 1993.
