European Palmpilot users, eyeing the American release of the Palm VII, now have a chance to get wireless with TDK Systems Europe Ltd’s release of a ‘soft’ modem for the Palm Computing platform. The GlobalPulse GSM software data modem runs on the Palm III, IIIx and V devices and connects to Nokia Oy’s 9100 and 9200 ranges of mobile phones, and ‘clone’ phones from Orange Plc and others, via a single cable. With the mobile link-up, users can access the internet, send and receive email, use Short Message Service (SMS) applications and synchronize with their desktop using the software. However, a spokesperson for TDK stressed that the system was not a practical one for extensive web surfing. GlobalPulse was developed by TDK in collaboration with a French Palm software house, Smartcode Software, which has now been acquired by 3Com Corp, the parent company of Palm Computing. The GlobalPulse software is available now, priced at 69 pounds ($110), TDK says it is working on versions for other mobile computers.
