The personal computer business begins to look decidedly incestuous, and in the latest move, Tandy Corp and Matsushita Electric Industrial Co are to work together to design a family of 8-, 16- and 32-bit lap-top computers to be marketed by both companies in the US and by Matsushita in Europe. Tandy will make the 16-bit and 32-bit models for both firms for the US market to get round the punitive US tariffs on personal computers, Matsushita will make the 8-bit models and will manufacture in Japan for Europe. Matsushita makes parts of some PS/2 models in the US for IBM, but Tandy supplies personal computers for Matsushita to offer under the Panasonic brand name in the US market.
