Cupertino, California-based Tandem Computers Inc accompanied announcement that it would take a $90m restructuring charge some time in the fiscal year to September with a warning that it is likely to report a loss before any charges for the fiscal first quarter just ended, on turnover a little up on the $444m reported a year ago, on which it made $7m net. The company looks to save $40m to $50m from the restructuring in the current year and $90m to $100m in fiscal 1993. Among the restructuring plans to be implemented over the next nine months are closing of some offices and facilities, write-offs of non-productive assets and reductions in staffing associated with new methods of operation, although the company does not speak of lay-offs. Employment at the NonStop systems builder has fallen by 3% since July 1991 and it expects another 6% reduction by the end of this fiscal, before taking into account several small acquisitions Tandem plans to make, which it sees adding under 300 people.
