TANDEM ADDS HIGH-END STORAGE PRODUCTS, NEW VLX PACKAGES

Tandem Computers Inc has six new packages of its high-end NonStop VLX system, new memory modules and a new large-capacity disk subsystem. The company says the three new VLX Large Memory modules improve response time and throughput by increasing the main memory capacity of the systems sixfold, to 96Mb per processor from 16Mb, 3Gb in a 32-processor system. The XL80 disk subsystem has unformatted capacity of 9.04Gb and is pitched at large database applications. The new VLX packages range in from two to 32 processors and are configured for applications requiring the processing of from 13 to more than 200 transactions per second and include the new memory and disk. The top-end packages come with Guardian 90XL, which includes NonStopSQL database manager with the operating system. The IPI-2 Intelligent Peripheral Interface XL80 subsystems are $115,000 with four drives, $180,000 with eight, and two or four $20,000 controllers are needed; price per Mb can be as low as $20. VLM store is $54,500 for 16Mb, $75,000 for 24Mb, $115,000 for 48Mb. The new packaged VLX systems replace the existing ones and are $560,000 for a two-proces.lh 6 sor up to $8.7m for a 32-processor system, the latter with the software.
