Those Bandai Co Tamagotchi virtual pets – and their imitators – are gobbling up swathes of Taiwan’s semiconductor fabrication capacity. Electronic Buyers News claims that chips used by the toys now account for 10% to 15% of the island’s fab capacity – the foundries are said to be making 20,000 to 30,000 eight-inch silicon wafers per months just for the devices. The demand is said to be hurting fabless integrated circuit design companies requiring manufacturing facilities.
