There was some renewed talk about a possible acquisition of Vantive Corp by Peoplesoft Inc at the DCI Sales Force Automation conference in San Jose this week. Hints that the company might be seeking an acquisition partner emerged in April, with Peoplesoft as a potential candidate, but speculation soon cooled. Peoplesoft has always had a stronger relationship with Vantive than with market leader Siebel Systems Inc, but in August it signed partnership agreement with both firms, appearing to put them more on an equal footing. SAP, Baan Co NV and Oracle Corp are all further down the front-office integration road. Meanwhile, Forbes magazine hears that three private companies in the same space, Markham, Ontario-based Saratoga Systems Inc, Bellevue, Washington-based Onyx Software Corp and Pivotal Software Inc, also from Bellevue, are all considering initial public offerings by the end of the year.
