ICP Electronics Inc, a Taiwanese builder of industrial single board computers, has announced what it claims is the industry’s first range of IDE Flash Disk devices, and boasts that they are the best solution to replace the conventional rotating hard disk. It says that the new devices, solid state Flash storage disks which conform to standard 1.8, 2.5 and 3.5 disk drive formats, offer capacity ranging from 4MB to 512MB and are 100% IDE HDD compatible. They offer a plug and play alternative to conventional drives, supporting most standard HDD utility specifications, including 16-bit Reed Solomon Algorithm error detection, 3.3V and 5V interfaces and ATA power-down commands and sleep mode, ICP claims. The first ICP products are being targeted at industrial environments where the high shock and vibration resistance features of the Flask Disks give them an edge of over conventional drives. They are also said to offer lower power consumption and faster access times.
