Hon Hai Precision Industry Co has filed one of the first patent infringement lawsuits brought by a Taiwanese company against a US company. Hon Hai, and Foxconn Electronics Inc, its exclusive licensee in the US, are filing suit against San Jose, California-based Kycon Inc and two of its distributors. The complaint involves three Kycon products used to connect peripheral devices to personal computers, which Hon Hai claims infringe four of its patents. The distributors are California Switch and Signal Inc and Sager Electronics Inc.

Hon Hai says its owns 350 patents relating to the design of PC components, all filed in the US. It is one of the world’s largest manufacturers of PC cable and cable assemblies and PC enclosures, and has factories in Scotland, Ireland, China, Taiwan and the US.
