The Taiwanese government will investigate allegations that L M Ericsson Telefon AB paid Taiwan $38m in bribes to secure six cellular telephone contracts from the government, Reuter reports from Taipei: last month, legislator Yen Chin-fu alleged that Nationalist party deputies and Liu Chao-kai, president of Taiwan’s Tecom Co Ltd and brother of communications minister Liu Chao-shiuan, used their influence to secure contracts; both Ericsson and Liu have denied the allegations; last month seven Taiwanese executives, including the son of a former president, were charged with corruption in connection with a $173m construction contract that was awarded by the state-owned Chinese Petroleum Corp.
