Chinese smartphone maker Xiaomi is under investigation in Taiwan over security threat, for allegedly sending user data back home.
Taiwanese authorities claim that some of the Xiaomi phones automatically send user data to the company servers located in Beijing, which could lead to security breaches, according to a statement in Taiwan’s executive branch.
It is not known whether the investigation will result in ban of the smartphone in the country, but a decision in this regard is expected in three months. The claims reflects the scrutiny the Chinese companies are facing abroad, as Chinese government and companies are accused of breaching cyber and industrial security, according to Reuters.
This is not the first time the company has been questioned; previously the company came under fire for providing unauthorised data access, which forced the company to upgrade its operating system.
Apart from Xiomi, South Korean messaging app Line and Chinese app maker WeChat are also subjected to scrutiny, and Taiwan’s police officials have been asked not to use WeChat since August.
