The Taipei City Government recently announced the launch of Taipei Easy Call, which could see 200,000 people making VoIP calls from their mobile handsets over the city’s Wi-Fi network. Taipei Easy Call is joint effort between the city and the Taipei Computer Association and targets mainly schools, government offices, and companies.
The service will allow user’s mobile phones to switch between calls using either the WiFi network or a mobile network. The advantage of using the WiFi network for VoIP calls is the cheaper costs, especially for international calls. However, it is not clear how local mobile operators are going to react to this threat to their revenue streams.
As part of a commitment to promoting Taipei Easy Call, the city government has been replacing the public switched telephone network with the wireless VoIP service for all of its administrative units and all public middle and elementary schools around the city.
