It was a long time in coming but Cambridge, UK-based Tadpole Technology Plc has finally added Digital’s Equipment Corp’s 64- bit Unix operating system to its Alphabook 1 notebook series. Tadpole has been promising Digital Unix since 1994. Somewhat confusingly the latest release carries the same nomenclature as the existing OpenVMS model introduced back in December 1995. The Alphabook comes with the 21066-A 233MHz Alpha processor, 512K level 2 cache, a PCI system bus interface for high-speed access to graphics, PCMCIA and SCSI interfaces. System memory is upgradable using SIMMs in configurations starting at 32Mb and going up to 128Mb. It includes 1Mb of video RAM, a 10.4 color TFT active matrix screen, and two docking station options for peripherals. Prices start from 10,000 pounds. Tadpole says it hasn’t got plans for NT at present.
