Tacoma has imposed a 6% tax on Internet access providers – wherever they are based – if they have any subscribers in Tacoma. And as well as the tax on gross receipts generated within city limits, it wants all Internet access providers with Tacoma subscribers to obtain a $72-a-year city business license. According to Associated Press, an outcry has prompted a review of the tax by City Manager Ray Corpuz. If the name Tacoma, Washington rings any bells, it’s likely to be because of that famous piece of grainy film that shows a bridge with a car on it shaking itself to pieces as high winds set up harmonic vibrations and cause it resonate at its natural frequency.
