The company, an integral part of Europe’s top phone carrier, Deutsche Telekom [DT], owns T-Mobile USA, the smallest of the six US national operators.

It did consider merger options last year with some of its rivals, but decided to go it alone.

Instead T-Mobile is concentrating on its home market and aims to considerably increase spending for the radio part of the new third-generation (3G) mobile phone network in Europe to E500 million ($599 million).

It is not abandoning the US. It already invests $2 billion annually and is likely to continue at that rate.
