SYSTEMS DESIGNERS IN DAP, TRANSPUTER PLAY-OFF PACT

By CBR Staff Writer

The Inmos Transputer is to be put to a testing challenge in parallel processing under a contract awarded to Systems Designers Plc by the Special Systems Department of the Royal Aircraft Establishment, Farnborough. The mission is to design a parallel image processing system, and Systems Designers will design three alternatives to be played off against each other. One will use Transputers, a second will be based on the ICL Distributed Array Processor – now the property of Active Memory Technology Ltd, in which ICL retains a substantial minority holding (CI No 556). The third will be built with custom hardware. The three will then be played off so that the optimum hardware and software design can be established. The aim is to develop a machine to detect features on remote images.
