Having apparently failed to deter its tormentor in the courts, SyQuest Technology Inc, Fremont, California has resorted to shock tactics and warns its customers using 5.25 cartridges made by French start-up Nomai SA that they may cause damage to SyQuest drives and to cartridges subsequently used with the drives, or loss of data – late last year, SyQuest got to hear that Nomai planned to make cartridges for use with its SQ555 and SQ5110 drives, and says it has now examined samples of cartridges provided by Nomai and detected the terrible things that it alleges they may do to customers’ equipment – SyQuest got a court order enjoining Nomai from the sale of cartridges for use with SyQuest drives on December 2, based on evidence presented in court that Nomai cartridges can cause catastrophic head crashes when used with SyQuest drives and that its technology director stole SyQuest trade secrets; Nomai has continued to ship its cartridges in violation of both the original court order and the subsequent order now in effect, it says.
