Syntelligence International Ltd is expanding the market for its two expert systems software applications, Lending Advisor and Underwriting Advisor, from the mainframe area to the stand alone and networked PS/2 world under OS/2. Lending Advisor and Underwriting Advisor are knowledge-based systems for financial risk evaluation by banks and insurance companies. The Advisor products were previously available on a minimum configuration of an IBM 4381, usually operating at the top end 3090 under MVS/XA or MVS/ESA. Syntelligence combines expert systems with an advanced Knowledge-Based System programming language. The products rely on their own resident intelligence together with input from the loans officers or underwriters to broaden the knowledge base. The products evaluate industry risk, financial performance, management competence and projected financial performance, to establish an accurate borrower rating. Information of this type soon dates, and an overwrite facility exists. New information can be assimilated within hours, according to sales director Peter Wemyss. The OS/2 version is currently in beta-test in two high street clearing banks. Syntelligence is hopeful that contracts will be signed this year. A straightforward contract would net the company about UKP1.5m, a custom-built system up to UKP3m. A Windows 3.1/NT interface is in development, Wemyss says. The product was originally developed in the US, but the company was bought out in 1989 and is now headquartered in Redhill, Surrey, but retains the US-based development team.
