London-based Synon Ltd, developer of the Synon/2 computer aided software engineering tool for IBM AS/400 and System 38 mid-range systems, has begun offering applications software to its users with a new accounts system – Synon Model Applications Financials. Written in Synon/2, the software can be customised using the accompanying development environment to fit the particular requirements of, for instance, the construction, manufacturing or distribution industries. As well as the usual general ledger, fixed assets and report generator modules, SMA Financials supports event accounting, where the user can define what sort of information they want to see at the time of enquiry. Synon/2 is written in PL/I and generates native RPG III or Cobol code for the AS/400: Synon now claims 1,000 licences worldwide. Available in the second quarter, the software costs UKP40,000 for SMA Financials, and UKP29,500 for Synon/2. Synon is also launching the software through its US subsidiary, and plans other language versions this year.
