True to its word that it won’t abandon its legion of AS/400 customers to concentrate on its exciting Obsydian object-oriented tool, Larkspur, California-based Synon Corp has launched version 5.0 of Synon/2E. And it says it is already working on version 6.0 of the development tool. The company claims release 5.0 has a substantially changed structure that makes the tool more flexible and gives the user a personal computer-like interface. The major change is something called a model object file, where objects refer to programs and files, which is intended to enable developers to manage development projects better. Model object lists are created once the basic design model of the application has been entered, the developer then uses the lists to complete the other elements of the application. The new interface comes from support for Extended Non-Programmable Terminal User Interface, which enables AS/400 screens to be regenerated as special personal computer-like displays, IBM Corp InfoWindow II te rminals or personal computers using Wall Data Inc’s Rumba/400 terminal emulation product.
