Symbolics Inc has won a valuable commitment in Japan from major Nichimen Corp, which has just opened a $400,000 artificial intelligence centre in Tokyo: it expects tuition receipts to reach between $600,000 and $800,000 a year as it trains engineers to use Symbolics workstations; Nichimen has been importing Symbolics gear since 1982, and has accumulated sales of 300 systems at an average unit value of $150,000 – $450m all told.
