Bloody but unbowed after a series of boardroom rows and resignations, Cambridge, Massachusetts-based Symbolics Inc yesterday lowered the entry price for its line of symbolic processing machines with new products that also give users more flexibility in configuring colour graphics systems. The new 3630 is described as a powerful development system with expanded memory and larger disk capacity: with 2M 36-bit words of memory, 380Mb of disk, 19 black-and-white display and the Genera system software is $39,000 with ships this month. The Symbolics 3653 multi-user departmental development system packages up to three systems in a single cabinet and costs significantly less than three systems. The basic model has one system with similar configuration to the 3630, with prices for a full three-CPU system starting at $90,000 – $30,000 per user. On the colour front, Symbolics has combined the functions of the monochrome console and colour monitor for the 3630, 3650 and 3653 colorstations, eliminating the need for two screens and prices go from $46,400 for the 3630 colorstation to $61,700 for the high end 3650 with colour. They also arrive this month. And theer is an Lbus-to-VMEbus interface so that users can connect to VME systems and options, access files and exchange data with devices on VME systems. The interface consists of two boards on a ribbon cable, costs $6,600 and will be out in June.
