Symbol Technologies Inc, Bohemia, New York is restructuring its operations to save $16m annually – but the moves will cost it about $34m pre-tax against its figures this quarter: it is consolidating engineering and manufacturing operations for the Portable Systems Division in Costa Mesa, California and the Bohemia-based Bar Code Scanning Division into a single Products Group in Bohemia, and expanding the West Coast systems operations into a Systems Group responsible for development, project management and support of custom systems based on Symbol products; it will also streamline sales, marketing, finance and administrative departments along functional lines, with fewer management layers, centralised in Bohemia; all that means that 500 jobs are to go at the Costa Mesa base, through a combination of transfers, incentive packages and redundancy packages; the workforce in Bohemia will increase by 300.
