Symbian Ltd, the joint venture to develop and market new wireless information device software, has increased its R&D operation after acquiring the Swedish Mobile Applications Lab owned by Ericsson at Ronneby on the Southern tip of Sweden. The lab will be turned a development center for the EPOC operating system using its existing expertise in telecommunications, Bluetooth and user interface technology. Symbian, is owned by Psion Plc, Nokia Oy, LM Ericsson Telefon AB and Motorola Inc, and is looking to build a strong technical lead with Microsoft Corp making efforts to promote its CE operating system as a rival. The Ronneby base will develop links with technology companies and research centers throughout Scandinavia and Symbian plans to build close links with the nearby University of Karlskrona/Ronneby for joint R&D projects.
