SYMANTEC’S QUARTERDECK BUY WILL HELP IT AVOID LAWSUIT

By CBR Staff Writer

One of the main reasons behind the acquisition of Quarterdeck Corp by Symantec Corp appears to be the lawsuit Symantec is currently fighting with Network Associates Inc (CI No 3,490). Network Associates acquired CyberMedia Inc back in July, a company that claimed that the patents behind its Unistaller product were being infringed by Norton’s Uninstall Deluxe products. A San Jose federal judge ordered Symantec to stop shipping the utility in September. Now the company appears to have decided to replace its product with Quarterdeck’s CleanSweep rather than fight the case. Quarterdeck, which duly received notification from Nasdaq on Thursday night that it was to be delisted, is to be acquired at the rock-bottom price of $0.52 a share, and even that represented a 19% premium over market prices.
