Although Symantec and Red Hat have previously signed a cooperative support agreement, this week Symantec said that the two companies have stepped up that cooperation by merging their CRM or trouble-ticket management systems for joint customers.

The Symantec products that will support RH version 5.0 within 90 days are Veritas Storage Foundation, NetBackup, and Cluster Server.

Customers may not roll out the new operating system into a production environment straight off, but they do want to be able to start testing it right off – this comes up a lot of times with our larger customers, said Symantec’s Linux product manager Laura Shepard.

Support for the Xen virtualization will be a major feature of the Red Hat update. Symantec said that it will beta test of its software with Xen-generated virtual servers running RH 5 over the next few months.

Symantec made a public pledge last year that its software would track major OS updates within 90 days, but that promise did not apply to Xen or VMware-generated virtual servers.
