In essence, it ties Symantec’s backup tool to the nerve center that is used by all of the Altiris products. Altiris Notification Server is the communication server, powering the agent technology and serving as its CMDB (configuration management database). With the new integration, the notification center makes Symantec’s backup and recovery tool look like a native Altiris product.

The result of the integration is that the Altiris Notification Server can now deploy system recovery agents, in addition to the software patch and asset management agents that it already handles.

And it can incorporate system recovery into the software patching process, so that if a software patch deployed to a number of clients fails, it could trigger Backup Exec recovery to perform a rollback to the configuration captured by the last system snapshot.

The beta of the Symantec Altiris integration, called Backup Exec System Recovery Solution 6 (which, confusingly, supports Symantec Exec System Recovery 7.0), is available for beta now, and will enter general release early next month.
