Symantec Corp, Cupertino, California-based maker of utilities software, has reported second-quarter net income of $25.8m on revenue up 40.4% at $182.5m, compared to net income of $1.9m in the year-ago quarter. Earnings per share came in at $0.43, up from $0.03 a year ago. Excluding one-time charges, earnings amounted to $0.45, up from $0.18 a year-ago, when analysts surveyed by First Call were expecting $0.42.

The company said international revenues increased 65% over the same quarter a year ago and accounted for 41% of total revenue. Driven by strong corporate sales, particularly in anti-virus, revenue for the Europe, Middle East and Africa grew 52%, while revenue from the Asia Pacific and Japan regions grew 92% and 64%, respectively.

Gross margins for the quarter were 83.2%, down slightly from the 83.6% in the year-ago quarter. Nine-month net income was $49.6m on revenue up 33.6% at $357.7m, against net income of $9.6m last year. Reported earnings per share rose to $0.84 from $0.16. Before charges, however, EPS rose to $0.89 from $0.58 last year.
