The deal, which was made for an undisclosed amount of cash, is expected to close shortly and will see Symantec upgrade its products over a six to nine month timeframe, according to Carlin Wiegner, senior director of web security at Symantec.

We had planned to deliver our own solutions this year, but now we go to market with something better, and quicker, he said.

On the security side, the old Brightmail security gateway software and appliances will be updated with IM-related IMLogic features, and the hosted email security service, which Symantec white-labels from an unidentified third-part, will also get the treatment.

On the Veritas side of the Symantec house, Enterprise Vault, currently used for archiving emails and other documents for speedy retrieval, will be updated to account for email too.

IMLogic is one of a handful of IM management companies that emerged a few years ago to deal with the security and regulatory compliance requirements of companies that had started to buckle down their IM usage.

One of the company’s biggest claims to fame is that its archiving features are OEMed by Microsoft Corp in its Live Communications Server 2005. While Symantec sells a lot into Exchange shops, IMLogic sells a lot of product to LCS users, according to IMLogic CTO Jon Sakoda.

IMLogic competes with the likes of FaceTime Communications Inc and Akonix Inc on the product front. Symantec will find itself competing against most of the hosted email security vendors on the services front too.
