Pushing ahead with a component architecture strategy to support its forthcoming Adaptive Server next-generation database Sybase Inc will sell its PowerBuilder 4GL, PowerJ and Power++ C++ development environments; Jaguar CTS transaction server; PowerSite web development system; and PowerDesigner AppModeler application design tool bundled as PowerStudio Enterprise. Priced from $6,000, Sybase hopes developers will begin buying the integrated suite for developing Adaptive Server applications rather than the point products; after all they contribute around 30% of the company’s revenue. The company claims that components created using one tool can be edited by another. Although Sybase is majoring on the use of Microsoft Corp Distributed COM for distributing application objects and database information, it’s also going to add support for Visigenc Software Inc’s VisiBroker object request broker to PowerBuilder 6.0 for OMG Corba shops. It claims PowerBuilder developers will be able to create ActiveX or Corba components. An Enterprise edition of 6.0 for Windows is due next quarter from $3,000; Unix and Mac versions will follow.
