Sybase Inc has become the latest company to make its database available as a NetWare Loadable Module. SQL Server 4.2, available from the end of the month, will run directly under Novell’s NetWare 3.11 network operating system, extending Sybase’s reach, which already encompasses Unix, OS/2 and Digital Equipment Corp’s VAX/VMS. The Emeryville California-based company says that the Loadable Module will have official Novell certification by its official release at the end of the month. It follows in the footsteps of Oracle Corp’s similar offering, which was certified in March. SQL Server 4.2 supports both NetWare IPX/SPX and Unix TCP/IP network protocols concurrently, enabling transparent connection to Sybase databases running on Unix hosts. At UKP1,600 per user or UKP25,000 for an unlimited user licence, the software will be sold through a combination of Sybase’s own sales force and systems integrators – who are still being sought. Sybase is not launching benchmarks ahead of the products release although sources suggest that the Module will compare favourably with existing implementations.
