Emeryville, California-based Sybase Inc is claiming performance of 261 transactions per second in an audited Transaction Performance Evaluation Council TPC-B benchmark test of its SQL Server on Digital Equipment Corp’s VAX 9000, and says it is the highest number of TPC-B transactions ever achieved by a single VAX – the test was done on a VAX 9000 Model 420 two processor computer, running Sybase SQL Server v4.8, a new release 8, announced yesterday and designed explicitly for symmetric multiprocessors as the VAX 9000; using the very doubtful five-year cost of ownership, the performance is said come to $13,251 per transaction per second.
