Sybase Inc has unveiled its answer to Oracle Corp’s Oracle Parallel Server in the shape of its Navigation Server, which was developed on AT&T Global Information Solutions Inc’s Series 3600 massively parallel iAPX-86 machines but will also be available on Hewlett-Packard Co’s HP 9000, IBM’s Powerparallel SP2 and clusters of Sun Microsystems Inc’s Sparcserver 1000 and Sparccenter 2000 systems. Navigation Server is currently in beta test and is expected to be generally available in next quarter on the AT&T 3600 with the other implementations following on in mid-1995. The Navigation Server is designed for massive Unix databases with hundreds of Gigabytes of data, offering high performance on large-scale decision-support systems as well as for mixed workloads. The Emeryville, California-based company claims that Navigation Server is the first massively parallel relational database management system designed for unlimited scalability and performance on open systems – and was built with AT&T Global’s help. Pricing for the Navigation Server, which is based on the processor configuration supported, starts at $150,000.
