SWISSCOM TO CUT 1,100 JOBS IN 1998

By CBR Staff Writer

Swisscom says it will cut 1,100 jobs during 1998 as part of its plan to reduce its total workforce by 4,000 by year 2000. According to Swisscom, 500 jobs would be cut in the area of marketing/products and another 500 in network services. Almost another 100 jobs would be cut in the technology and logistic business unit. The cuts are part of Swisscom’s efforts to reduce its workforce to 17,000 from 21,000 as it seeks to streamline and be competitive in a deregulated European environment. The Swiss government plans to partially privatize Swisscom in the second half of 1998.
