Swiss incumbent telco Swisscom AG yesterday put mobile internet access at the heart of its strategy, announcing its wireless application protocol (WAP) services will go live January 2000. The company says that the necessary infrastructure to roll out information and entertainment services via WAP to mobile handsets is already in place, and it is just waiting for WAP-compatible devices to become generally available before rolling out.
The announcement came at the Telecom 99 trade conference in Geneva, where Swisscom also unveiled its new mobile net access service for business users. Natel Office Link employs the High Speed Circuit Switched Data standard and up to four bundled channels to give near-ISDN speeds to laptops over a mobile connection. Compression middleware at the client and server side is required to run the service, which allows users to access the web and corporate intranet.
