Sweden is to give every one of its citizens who are over the age of six a personal electronic mail address, forming the onset of the country’s @Post service. The service, developed by Swedish Post will enable Swedish citizens to securely pay bills over the net, each person having their own mailbox. The technology used to implement the service is called Smartgate and has been developed by Peapod Group Plc. Running on Sun Microsystems Inc Starfire servers @Post will work in a similar way to the existing postal system with users having to buy a microstamp before mail can be sent.
